Gideon Peleioholani La’anui


As in–He was a member of the ali’i, or an island chief, having authority over much of the community life in collaboration with others, to make sure tasks were completed and the areas protected.

Very often, one will see reference to the Ali’i, which indicates membership in an elite group, usually from the lineage of the royal family.  People will dress accordingly at key events, even when there are people who emulate the Ali’i, in celebration of their authority.

Gideon Peleioholani La’anui was the grandnephew of King Kamehameha the Great, who was responsible for the unification of the Hawaiian islands under a single rule.
